Coronation Street death confirmed for Weatherfield favourite ‘in matter of weeks’
There’s heartbreak ahead in Weatherfield with a death reportedly set to air in just a matter of weeks in Coronation Street.
The loss isn’t, however, going to be a complete shock as fans already know that Julie Carp returned to the cobbles and confirmed that she is dying.
But viewers of the ITV soap might be surprised to learn the fan favourite will likely be killed off in just a few weeks time. According to reports from the Mirror, the funeral for the character, played by Katy Cavanagh, has already been filmed.
Julie first arrived on the cobbles in 2008 after a holiday romance with Kirk Sutherland. The relationship didn’t work out and when Julie set her sights on Jason Grimshaw her mum was forced to tell her that she was in fact Eileen’s half sister and Jason’s aunt.
After a brief fling with Eileen’s then-boyfriend Jessie Chadwick, who has since married Gail Platt and moved with her to France, Julie found love with newsagent Brian Packham, and they left the street together in 2015.
But when they split up, Brian eventually returned to Weatherfiield without her and Julie hadn’t been since since – until last month when she bumped into her nephew Todd Grimshaw at a tea dance for singles at the Chariot Square hotel.
She initially kept the news of being terminally ill from her sister Eileen Grimshaw, but soon told her what was going on ahead of Eileen’s own exit from the show.
Julie’s return comes after it had been revealed that Julie’s comeback would tie in with Eileen’s departure, after actress Sue Cleaver quit the role after more than two decades.
Now, new reports have revealed the cast have filmed heartbreaking funeral scenes and that the funeral is for Julie. With filming being around six to eight weeks ahead of transmission, this suggests the funeral will air in two months time or just under, possibly around May or June.
For the funeral to air in this time, it could mean the death is going to air in April or early May which is just weeks away. A source told Metro that cast members recently gathered to film the scenes, and that the plot would see Eileen contemplate her future ahead of her own exit.
A source told the publication: “Emotions were running high on set as the cast gathered to film Julie’s tragic funeral scenes. It’s a devastating, if not anticipated end for the character, who recently revealed her terminal cancer diagnosis.
“As viewers know, the story coincides with Sue Cleaver’s departure, with Eileen starting to contemplate her future in Weatherfield following the death of her sister. There was a real sense of this being the start of an end of an era.”
Sue announced her exit from the show at the start of the year. Her statement at the time read: “I’ve had 25 privileged years of working on Coronation Street. The door is still firmly open but as I reached my 60th year, I decided it was time to embrace change, look for new adventures and live fearlessly.”
It’s believed that conversations about her departure first started last summer after she took an extended period of leave from the show to take part in the theatre production of Sister Act as as Mother Superior. The early conversations “gave writers plenty of time to create a strong exit storyline for her, which viewers will love.”
An exit date has yet to be revealed but it was claimed she would depart in spring in initial reports. Her onscreen son Jason Grimshaw, played by Ryan Thomas, will return for the storyline.
