Swansea City have sacked their head coach Luke Williams with the team 17th in the Championship. The Swans have lost eight of their past 10 games, including Saturday’s 3-1 league defeat at Stoke City.

“This was a difficult decision and one that has not been taken lightly,” said chairman Andy Coleman. “Luke has led the club through some challenging periods and we appreciate his hard work.

“Unfortunately, since the turn of the year our performances and results have not been of the standard required at this level. Ultimately, that has led us to conclude a change is required in order to bring about an improvement in our showings on the pitch.”

Williams moved to south Wales in January 2024 after leaving his role at Notts County. Alan Sheehan will assume the role of caretaker head coach, with Williams’ backroom staff members Ryan Harley and George Lawtey leaving.

Swansea were ninth and four points off the playoff places after beating Luton at home on 29 December. Since then they have taken four points from nine games, a run that included losing 3-0 at their bitter rivals Cardiff.
