Two Regina Cougars medal at U Sports track and field championship

The University of Regina Cougars are coming home with some hardware from the U Sports track and field championships.

After winning five medals at the Canada West championships, Shelaine Pritchard won a pair of bronze medals for the Cougars while Jonathan Podbielski, who won three gold medals at the Canada West championships also claimed bronze at nationals.

On the opening day of the championships hosted by the University of Windsor, Pritchard finished in third place in the women’s pentathlon after great performances in each of the events.

After also claiming bronze last year in the pentathlon, Pritchard started off the event by winning the 60-metre hurdles, while also breaking the U of R’s school record, lowering the time from 8.32 seconds to 8.30 seconds.

Following a fourth-place finish in high jump (1.60 metres), Pritchard then beat the rest of the field in shot put with a throw of 13.58 metres.

After a third-place finish in long jump (5.80 metres), Pritchard entered the final event — the 800-metre run — leading the pentathlon. However, despite finishing with a personal best time in the event (2:31.96) she finished in seventh place in the event and third place overall through the five events.

On Day 2, with the pentathlon in the books, Pritchard picked up her second bronze medal of the championships as she claimed bronze in the women’s long jump with a jump of 6.03 metres.

That same day, the Cougars collected another bronze as Podbielski finished third place for the second straight year in the men’s 1000-metre run, finishing with a time of 2:22.39. It was the fourth national medal of Podbielski’s career.

Overall, the Cougar men finished in 16th place while the women finished in 11th at the event.

Other top 10 results included Ian Teichler finishing sixth in the men’s 1,500-metre race, the women’s relay team finished sixth in the 4×200-metre event, Storm Zablocki finishing seventh in the men’s 60-metre sprint, Pritchard finished seventh in women’s shot put and Kaidyn Keith finished 10th in women’s triple jump.
