Vernon Kay, married to Strictly Come Dancing star Tess Daly, quickly addressed comments he made with his BBC Radio 2 co-star in case people got the wrong impression
Vernon Kay made an awkward blunder live on air when reminiscing on his BBC Radio 2 show with his co-star.
The TV presenter, who turns 51 today, hosts the daily slot of mid-mornings over on the BBC radio station, where he plays classic tunes, interviews big celebrity guests and tells tales of his own. On a recent show, Vernon let the ball drop about what he and producer Janice get up to, off air.
The conversation started when he asked Janice, real name Janine Maya-Smith, what her ‘unique selling point’ was. She expressed she had a lot of energy. Vernon responded, agreeably that she “puts a torch on in a dark room”.
After a few jokes back and forth, seemingly embarrassing his co-star, the DJ jokingly threatened: “Don’t make me tell the story about last night, Janice.” He continued to tell listeners: “Janice and I had a right good time, honestly.
“You know when you go on a school trip, and there’s always the two kids at the back who are always eating each other’s packed lunches and getting into all sorts of trouble…that was me and Janice last night.”
He continued by saying “we had a right good time didn’t we?” And she happily agreed, saying that it was “really good fun”. After a quick break, the pair realised that their previous comments may have given off the wrong impression.
Vernon, who is married to fellow TV presenter Tess Daly, quickly took to the mic mid-conversation with Janice to address the unintended innuendo. He said: “Did it sound like that? Did it sound like we were having rudie dudie? No stop it, pack it in. I know the red lights on, we’re live Janice! You’re a lady, clear your thoughts.”
It’s not the first time the presenter has stuck his foot in it live on his morning radio show. Recently, Vernon had a slip of the tongue with his fellow co-star Bobbie Pryor in a cheeky response about traffic conditions. Bobbie urged drivers to avoid getting “too close”, to which Vernon chimed in quick-wittedly. He said: “You don’t get too close to your partner that often,” which sent Bobbie into a fit of giggles.
In a playful response she said: “Don’t bring it up at work.” Quick to clarify Vernon then responded adding that he wasn’t referring to himself, but he meant “in general”.
This week Vernon was also joined by famous actor and musician John Simm on his show where the two uncovered the movie star’s top ten tracks. The two bonded over music and played classic hits from the likes of Elvis, Whitney Houston and more.
